In the ACT, every cat born after 1 July 2022 must be kept on your property 24 hours a day, and an enclosed area in your backyard counts.

We sell the netting and portable enclosures that do the job, and if you'd rather have it built, local installers around Canberra use our netting.

Build it yourself, or have it built?

Portable enclosure

A freestanding enclosure goes together without drilling, so it suits renters and anyone who might move.

Net your own space

Close in a patio, side path or part of the yard with netting by the metre. The DIY cat run builder works out what you need.

Canberra's cat rules

Every cat born after 1 July 2022 must be contained on your property 24 hours a day. That can be your house, an enclosed area in a backyard or courtyard, a cat crate or a leash. In 17 declared suburbs, such as Bonner, Crace and Whitlam, all cats must be contained whatever their age.

All cats must be microchipped and registered, and you need a licence to keep four or more cats (ACT City Services).

Questions we get from Canberra

Can I use a portable enclosure in a rental?

Yes. Our portable enclosures stand on their own and need no drilling, so nothing is fixed to the property.

How much netting do I need?

Measure the space and put the sizes into the DIY cat run builder, which works out the netting and fixings.

Will a portable enclosure stand up to wind?

A portable enclosure shouldn't blow over. If you live in a windy spot, you can peg the frame to the ground, or weigh it down with sand bags if it sits on a hard surface. Read the help article.
