Cat netting FAQs

What size mesh is cat-proof?

Catnets's cat netting uses a 19mm mesh. Small enough that cat paws and heads can't pass through, large enough to keep the netting low-vis and breathable. We've used this mesh size on thousands of installs across Australia.

Should I buy cat netting by the metre or in rolls?

By-the-metre orders are best for single-area installs like a balcony, a window, or a partial fence. You only pay for what you cover. Pre-cut rolls work out cheaper for full enclosures, long fence runs, and any project where you already know the dimensions. Same mesh, same UV rating, both ship from our Sydney warehouse.

How long does cat netting last outdoors?

Our knotted polyethylene cat netting is UV-rated and retains 93% of its tensile strength after 10 years of direct sunlight. Real-world installs across Australia have lasted that long without replacement. Salt air, rain, snow, and freeze-thaw cycles don't affect it.

Can I install cat netting myself?

Yes. Most window, balcony, and patio installs take under an hour with our range of hardware. Larger fence runs and full enclosures take an afternoon and may need our stainless steel wire system for tensioning.

We also offer a range of installation videos for each surface type.

Is cat netting visible from a distance?

Black is the lowest-visibility option. It visually disappears against shaded backgrounds. Stone (a warm light grey) blends with light walls and railings. Both come in the same 19mm mesh. Most customers pick black for window and balcony installs because it reads as a faint shadow rather than netting.

What hardware do I need to install cat netting?

For a small balcony or window: a pack of UV-treated cable ties or our fastening clips. For a patio or fence run: clips + edging rope to finish the perimeter. For a full enclosure: clips + stainless steel wire for tensioning + zipper panels for access. Browse the DIY hardware collection for the parts that match your install.

Does cat netting block sunlight or airflow?

The 19mm mesh blocks less than 5% of light and effectively zero airflow. Plants under cat netting grow normally; balconies stay breezy. It's significantly more transparent than mosquito screens or shade cloth.
